Mid-life Crisis Rendition 2009: Mountain Bike Racing

I'm essentially a big kid with a passion for figuring out ways to combine friends, the outdoors, adrenaline and fun; mountain bike racing seems to be a natural fit.

Although, I've been riding mountain bikes "off and on" since the early 90's, 2009 will be my first extended foray into the competitive side of mountain biking. My introduction to mountain bike racing came rather unexpectedly last year. I was doing some landscaping in my yard and my neighbor Porter stopped by to tell me that he had decided to compete in a local mountain bike race and then proceeded to colorfully explain that his opinion of my masculinity would be seriously diminished if I didn't agree to join him. Since I'd been riding quite a bit, knew the trails, and wanted to preserve my rep in the neighborhood, I decided to say "What the hell!" and gave it a go. I'm glad I did. The whole experience was really positive; the people were cool; the scene was cool and I found a uniquely primal pleasure in pressing my pedals as hard and fast as I possibly could. I guess I was hooked because here we are six months later and I've decided to race the 2009 WVMBA series on a new mountain bike team called Team WELD-NRB.

There are many aspects of being part of Team WELD-NRB that I find very appealing. I look forward to exploring new parts of WV, riding new trails and pushing my personal limits. Above all I'm stoked to hang out with the members of Team WELD-NRB, which is comprised of old friends, new friends, my fiancée and my 15 year old son.

F.Y.I. Team WELD-NRB

Team WELD/NRB is a unique, grassroots race team conceived by New River Bike and WELD, a digital marketing agency. Our team will be headquartered in the New River Gorge of West Virginia. Our mission is to create a new grassroots racing model which promotes the sport of mountain biking and simultaneously advances the public's understanding of the benefits of cycling and cycling advocacy. This distinctive model will fuse the authenticity of grassroots racing and the power of Web 2.0 digital space to spread the benefits of the cycling lifestyle in a genuinely new and differentiated way. Think Twitter, YouTube and branded social media meet trail building, training and time trials, and you've got the idea.

Our Team: a dynamic, well-versed group of individuals with a mutual love for the sport and health. Team WELD/NRB will be composed of individuals of varied ages, lifestyles, occupations and cycling backgrounds. In fact, only two members on the 2009 team roster have extensive mountain bike racing experience. The rest of the roster is comprised of individuals that are new to competitive cycling, but bring wide-ranging experience in action sports including class V kayaking, rock climbing, skiing, and trail running. Diverse individuals bring diverse perspectives, and we feel this will be one of the most dynamic and appealing aspects of this concept.
